Teen Education and Motherhood Program - TEAM

Overview

The TEAM Program is for Peel District School Board students between 14 and 20 in grades 9-12 who are pregnant or who have a child. These students may be currently enrolled in school or be returning to school with at least four credits to complete. Students attending this program are expected to have average academic potential, be willing to attend the program and meet program requirements.

The TEAM Program focuses on core compulsory subjects, offered through locally developed courses, applied level and/or open courses. There is a focus on parenting skills through a variety of workshops as well as weekly topics presented by a Peel Public Health Nurse.

Students normally attend the TEAM Program 5 days a week between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Students will take 4 courses each semester and will have the opportunity to obtain grade 9/10 compulsory courses they have failed.

Students are also expected to fulfill the literacy and 40 hours of Community Service diploma requirements.


Purpose


The purpose of the TEAM Program is to:
· provide an alternative learning environment for students 14-20 years of age who are either pregnant or have a child
· provide a supportive learning environment which promotes regular school attendance
· improve social skills and attitudes towards school, motivate students to complete their education
· provide a transition for students wishing to pursue college, return to regular school, or to go to work
· provide opportunities to learn positive parenting skills
· provide opportunities for women to support each other
· to facilitate contact between students and community service providers

Requirements

Students must be pregnant or currently have a child living with them.

Students must be currently enrolled in a Peel District School Board school or their last school attended must be a Peel District School Board school.

Students require at least 4 credits in order to graduate.

Students have maintained their position on the waiting list by updating contact information.

Students must arrange to use childcare services once their child is 3 months of age or older.

Students meet with the Peel Alternative School vice principal, counsellor and TEAM teacher and are willing to meet the requirements of the program, including regular attendance.


Admission


The student must contact their home school guidance department to indicate interest in the program. The home school sends a referral to the PAS vice principal. The Referral Form is available on the Alternative Programs website. Students will meet with the PAS guidance counsellor and vice principal and must bring the following:

· status sheet
· transcript
· literacy test results, if available
· community involvement tracking sheet

If this meeting is positive and there is an opening in the TEAM Program, the student is enrolled.


Demission


Students who do not comply with the PAS Code of Conduct will be withdrawn.

Students who do not attend regularly will be withdrawn. "Regular attendance" is defined as attendance at all scheduled classes. Students must phone in absences to the teacher for each day of absence.
