Senior Program

Program Description 2006-07

Overview
The Senior Program is for Peel District School Board students between 16 and 20 in grades 11 and 12 who require an alternative educational setting due to circumstances such as:
· commitments to work
· commitments to family
· commitments to competitive sports teams or activities such as professional acting which prevent full time attendance at a regular Peel school
· need for 2 credits to graduate

Potential candidates are expected to have average academic potential and are not normally identified as exceptional, as these students' needs can be better addressed in existing Special Education programs in their home school.

The Senior Program provides a variety of courses, however offerings are limited by enrollment, staff and facilities.

Students normally take 2 or 3 courses per semester. Course load is moderated by entry date*. Each course is scheduled for 2 hours a week. Between classes students must work independently on course work. Expectations for these courses are the same as they are in any Peel secondary school. The delivery method and school environment are, however, quite different. The school sites and classes are small and there is a great deal of individual attention and assistance from the teachers.

*Entry is "continuous" and students will be assigned a course load which can realistically be accomplished based on their entry date. Course work is expected to be completed by the end of each semester.

Admission
Students must be over 16 and be currently enrolled in a Peel public secondary school or their last school attended must be a Peel public school.

Students should discuss the program with their home school guidance counsellor or vice principal. If they agree that this program is suitable for the student, they will complete the Peel Alternative School Student Referral Form (available on the Alternative Programs website) and send it to the appropriate vice principal, Peel Alternative School:
